FSB declares female detained over gathering intel near Crimean Bridge

(MENAFN)
Russian authorities have detained two women in Crimea accused of gathering intelligence on air defense systems near the Crimean Bridge for Ukrainian security services, the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported Wednesday. Both suspects, residents of Crimea in their late 30s, are believed to have acted independently but volunteered to collaborate with Ukraine’s security agencies.

One of the women, from the port city of Sevastopol, allegedly began cooperating with Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in late 2022. She is accused of committing arson at a power transformer substation in 2023 and taking photos of Russian air defense positions near Kerch, a city at Crimea’s eastern edge connected to Russia’s Krasnodar Region by the Crimean Bridge—Europe’s longest bridge.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted the Crimean Bridge, considering its destruction a key objective. Kiev has launched multiple attacks on the structure using car bombs, Western-supplied cruise missiles, and unmanned maritime drones. Recently, the SBU released footage claiming a months-long operation to plant explosives equivalent to 1.1 tons of TNT near one of the bridge’s pillars. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed these claims, stating the bridge remains fully functional.

The second suspect, reportedly from Crimea’s northeastern Nizhnegorsk district, is accused of working with Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) to conduct surveillance on Russian military targets. The FSB says her information led to a Ukrainian strike on a Russian fuel depot.

Both women face up to 20 years in prison on treason charges if convicted. Earlier this week, the FSB also arrested a 59-year-old man in Crimea suspected of building an improvised explosive device under Ukrainian instructions.
