Zelensky disregards Russia’s latest peace memorandum
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky dismissed Russia’s latest peace proposal, describing it as an “ultimatum” that is unacceptable for Ukraine.
During peace talks in Istanbul on Monday, Moscow presented a proposal under which Ukraine would recognize the loss of its former regions that recently voted to become part of Russia, withdraw its troops from those areas, remain neutral, and reduce its military capabilities. The proposal also called for a ceasefire, a halt to troop movements and mobilization, a ban on arms deliveries from abroad, and a presidential election in Ukraine.
Zelensky dismissed these conditions immediately, insisting, “This is an ultimatum. We will not take it seriously.” He maintained that yielding territory would violate Ukraine’s constitution.
The lead Russian negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, insisted the proposal was a genuine opportunity to “achieve peace — or at least a ceasefire — and move toward a durable resolution.”
Zelensky also criticized the peace process itself, stating, “To continue diplomatic meetings in Istanbul that do not produce decisions — it’s meaningless.”
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested Zelensky dismissed the proposal because the talks were centered on people — referring to a large prisoner exchange slated for the weekend — and not financial aid or weapons.
This exchange, expected to be the largest of the conflict so far, will see 1,200 prisoners swapped on each side.
