India, Canada Repair Relations, Reinstate Envoys
The breakthrough came during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, held on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada. This marked their first face-to-face interaction since Carney assumed office after Canada’s recent general elections.
In a formal statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said: “The leaders underlined the need to pursue a constructive and balanced partnership grounded in mutual respect for concerns and sensitivities, strong people-to-people ties, and growing economic complementarities. In this regard, both sides agreed to take calibrated and constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship, beginning with the early return of high commissioners to each other's capitals.”
Both leaders emphasized the importance of reviving dialogue at the ministerial and working levels to rebuild confidence and energize bilateral cooperation. “The leaders underscored the importance of restarting senior ministerial as well as working-level engagements across various domains to rebuild trust and bring momentum to the relationship,” the statement added.
They also committed to restarting the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) talks, a key step toward achieving a broader Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
This diplomatic reset follows a turbulent period beginning in September 2023, when tensions erupted over the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar near Vancouver in June of that year—a case that ignited a major diplomatic rift between the two nations.
