Judge sentence Argentina’s ex Leader six years of house arrest

(MENAFN) Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the former President of Argentina, has been ordered to serve her six-year corruption sentence under house arrest, according to a decision issued by a federal judge on Tuesday.

Given Kirchner’s age—she is 72—and her continued visibility as a major political figure, the court deemed house arrest more suitable than prison. The ruling also highlighted security risks, referencing the 2022 assassination attempt on Kirchner and stating that her well-being “would become complex in a situation of prison confinement in coexistence with any type of prison population.”

As outlined in the court’s directive, Kirchner must begin serving her sentence without delay. She will be confined to her apartment in Buenos Aires, where she lives with her daughter and granddaughter, and will be under electronic monitoring.

The court emphasized that Kirchner “must remain at the registered address, an obligation that she may not break except in exceptional situations.” Any visitors to the apartment, apart from household staff, medical professionals, and other approved individuals, will require prior court authorization.

Kirchner had originally been sentenced in 2022 to six years in prison and permanently disqualified from public office following a conviction on corruption charges. Despite that ruling, she had remained free while awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court on her appeal.
