New Zealand, Singapore Strike Deal to Secure Fuel, Food Chains
(MENAFN) New Zealand and Singapore have formalized a landmark bilateral agreement designed to shield the uninterrupted flow of critical goods — including fuel, food, and construction materials — as vulnerabilities in global supply chains continue to mount.
Witnessed in Singapore by both nations' prime ministers, Monday's signing commits each country to eliminating export restrictions on essential supplies to the other, while establishing structured, practical cooperation on supply chain resilience, according to a statement issued by the New Zealand government.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon highlighted the immediate strategic significance of the deal, particularly for his country's energy security: "With a third of New Zealand's fuel refined in Singapore, this agreement turns trust into action, and right now, that's keeping fuel flowing to New Zealand when it matters most."
New Zealand's Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay described the pact as a direct effort to insulate both nations from future supply chain shocks, drawing on the hard-won cooperative frameworks forged between the two countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyond fuel, the agreement extends its protective scope to food, building materials, and other indispensable commodities. Pending domestic approval in both countries, the deal is set to be absorbed into the pre-existing New Zealand-Singapore free trade agreement, further deepening one of the region's most enduring bilateral trade partnerships.
