Philippines Deploys Naval, Air Assets Amid S. China Sea Tensions with China

(MENAFN) The Philippines has announced that it is deploying aircraft and naval vessels to confront and push away Chinese research ships it says were operating without authorization in waters it considers under its jurisdiction, according to reports.

As stated by reports, the Philippine Coast Guard detected four Chinese research vessels near Philippine waters, prompting a response aimed at asserting maritime control and preventing what Manila described as unauthorized scientific activity.

According to general accounts, Philippine Coast Guard commander Ronnie Gil Gavan said the country would not allow any marine scientific research conducted without official approval.

“We will not tolerate any illegal marine scientific research conducted without our government’s consent. We are deploying aircraft and vessels to challenge and drive away these unauthorized vessels to protect Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights,” he said.

The developments come amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, where overlapping territorial claims have repeatedly led to confrontations between regional states.

According to reports, China’s state media also stated that several Philippine personnel allegedly landed on a disputed reef area in the Spratly Islands, which Beijing refers to as the Nansha Qundao.

Chinese authorities claimed that their coast guard responded to the situation and took action in accordance with legal procedures to assert what they described as territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.

As stated by reports, the area remains a sensitive flashpoint, with both countries maintaining competing claims and regularly accusing each other of unauthorized activity in contested waters.
