US Military Launches “Project Freedom” to Secure Shipping in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) The US military has confirmed the launch of a new initiative called “Project Freedom,” aimed at supporting the safe passage of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, according to statements from US Central Command.

As stated by reports, US Central Command announced on Sunday that its forces will assist merchant vessels beginning May 4, in line with directives linked to US President Donald Trump.

CENTCOM said the mission is intended to restore freedom of navigation and support global maritime security, deploying a range of military assets including guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft operating across land, sea, and air domains, unmanned systems, and roughly 15,000 service members.

“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy,” said CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper, adding that the operation will continue alongside broader naval security measures.

According to general accounts, some reports indicated that the operation may not involve direct escorting of commercial vessels by US warships. Instead, naval forces are expected to remain nearby to respond if threats emerge, while also advising ships on safer maritime routes and avoiding hazardous areas.

As stated by reports, US officials described the effort as a defensive and protective measure rather than active convoy escorting in all cases.

Trump separately said on social media that the US would begin helping neutral ships exit the strait safely, calling the move a humanitarian step for countries not involved in regional hostilities.
