Macron Says Europe Will Not Join Unclear Operations on Hormuz

(MENAFN) France’s President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that Europe is increasingly developing “its own security solutions” and will not take part in any operations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if they are carried out under what he described as an “unclear framework,” according to remarks made at a regional summit in Armenia.

Speaking at the 8th Meeting of the European Political Community in Yerevan, Macron said European nations are taking greater responsibility for their own security by boosting defense spending and working on shared strategic initiatives.

He pointed to post-2022 developments such as the European Political Community itself, European support mechanisms for Ukraine through what he referred to as coalition efforts, and other ad hoc diplomatic initiatives linked to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Macron said France supports the reopening of the key maritime route but made clear that it would not participate in any force-based action lacking a clearly defined international framework.

“If the United States is ready to reopen Hormuz, that is very good. That is what we have been asking for from the beginning,” he said.

He further stressed that France favors a coordinated diplomatic arrangement between Iran and the United States, describing such a negotiated approach as the only viable way to guarantee free maritime passage “without restrictions and without tolls.”
