Provided by AGPMarking World Press Freedom Day on Sunday, Turk describes a free press as “the oxygen of a free and open society,” emphasizing its essential role in informing the public, exposing abuses, and supporting transparency.
He notes that journalism is becoming more dangerous globally, stating that at least 14 journalists have been killed so far this year, while only a small fraction of killings over the past two decades have resulted in full accountability.
Turk also highlights the risks faced by reporters in conflict areas, describing Israel’s war in Gaza as a “death trap” for media workers, with nearly 300 journalists killed since October 2023, as stated by reports.
Beyond war zones, he points to growing threats such as surveillance, legal pressure, and online harassment, noting that women journalists are often disproportionately targeted.
Calling for urgent international action, Turk urges governments to stop persecution of journalists, repeal restrictive legislation, and ensure accountability for attacks. He also calls on technology companies to take stronger steps against disinformation and online abuse.
“Journalists cannot fight alone,” he said, stressing the need for stronger protections to preserve press freedom and democratic values worldwide.
