Turkey Signs Deal to Procure Domestically Developed KAAN Fighter Jet
(MENAFN) Türkiye has taken a significant step in its defense modernization program by signing a procurement contract for its domestically developed KAAN fighter jet, reinforcing efforts to build a next-generation air combat capability.
The agreement was concluded on Wednesday between the country’s Defense Industries Secretariat and Turkish Aerospace Industries during the SAHA 2026 International Defense and Aerospace Exhibition held in Istanbul, where Anadolu serves as the global communications partner.
The contract was formally signed by Defense Industries Secretariat head Haluk Gorgun, Turkish Aerospace Industries Chairman Omer Cihad Vardan, and CEO Mehmet Demiroglu.
KAAN is being developed under Türkiye’s National Combat Aircraft program and is intended to gradually replace the F-16 Fighting Falcon fleet currently operated by the Turkish Air Forces Command, with phased retirement expected to begin in the 2030s.
Designed and produced using domestic engineering capabilities, KAAN is built to incorporate advanced features associated with modern fifth-generation fighter aircraft. These include reduced radar visibility, an internal weapons bay, high maneuverability, improved pilot situational awareness, and integrated sensor fusion systems.
The project reflects Türkiye’s broader push to expand its indigenous defense industry and reduce reliance on foreign military platforms while strengthening long-term air force capabilities.
