NYT Columnist Reports Claims of Sexual Abuse Against Palestinian Detainees
(MENAFN) According to reports, a New York Times opinion columnist has claimed that Palestinian detainees have faced widespread sexual violence involving Israeli prison personnel, soldiers, interrogators, and settlers, based on interviews and human rights documentation.
In a column titled The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians, columnist Nicholas Kristof said he spoke with 14 Palestinian men and women who described alleged sexual assault and other forms of abuse during detention or encounters with Israeli forces and settlers.
He wrote that there was “no evidence that Israeli leaders order rapes,” but argued that Israeli authorities have created “a security apparatus where sexual violence has become,” and referenced a UN report while making his assessment.
The article included accounts from former detainees who alleged rape, physical beatings, threats of sexual violence, and degrading treatment during imprisonment.
Kristof also cited findings from several organizations, including Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, Save the Children, B’Tselem, and the Committee to Protect Journalists, which have documented allegations of abuse and mistreatment of Palestinian detainees.
