Fatal Apartment Fire in France’s Lyon Suburb Leaves Three Dead

(MENAFN) Three people were killed and around 50 residents were forced to evacuate after a fire tore through an apartment building Monday in a suburb of Lyon in southeastern France, according to reports.

One of the victims reportedly died after jumping from an upper floor while trying to escape the blaze. Fourteen additional people suffered from smoke inhalation, though officials said none were believed to be in critical condition.

The fire erupted Monday morning inside a seven-story residential building located in the commune of Decines before firefighters managed to bring the flames under control.

Authorities in Lyon said prosecutors had opened an investigation into several possible offenses, including “damage caused by dangerous means resulting in death, intentional homicide by an organized group, and participation in a criminal association with a view to committing a crime.”

Officials have not excluded the possibility that the incident may have been deliberate.

According to reports, the neighborhood has recently experienced multiple incidents tied to drug trafficking activity, including acts of intimidation and arson attacks.
