China Sets ‘Red Lines’ Ahead of Expected Trump–Xi Meeting

(MENAFN) According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump, who recently described Xi as “a friend” and “somebody that we get along with.” Trump also indicated that discussions may include the ongoing war involving Iran, amid US and Israeli accusations that China has provided indirect support to Tehran.

Ahead of the meeting, China’s embassy in the United States outlined four key “red lines” that it says must not be crossed in bilateral relations. These include Taiwan, issues related to democracy and human rights, China’s “development paths and political systems,” and what Beijing refers to as its “development right.” Chinese officials have repeatedly warned Washington against interfering in what they consider internal affairs, particularly regarding Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a “separatist” entity.

Tensions between the two powers have also been influenced by the broader conflict involving Iran. US sanctions targeting a Chinese refinery over alleged purchases of Iranian oil have further strained relations. In response, Chinese authorities reportedly instructed domestic private refiners not to comply with the sanctions, which Beijing has criticized as unlawful.

Chinese officials have also rejected accusations that Beijing provides military assistance to Iran, while condemning US sanctions on Chinese satellite firms alleged to have supplied intelligence-related data to Tehran. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated, “The Chinese government always asks Chinese companies to operate in accordance with laws and regulations. We will firmly protect Chinese businesses’ legitimate rights and interests.”

Overall, both sides continue to trade accusations while maintaining that economic and security disputes remain deeply sensitive ahead of high-level diplomatic engagement.
