US Naval Blockade Diverts Commercial Shipping Near Iran
(MENAFN) The US military announced on Tuesday that numerous commercial vessels trying to access or depart Iranian harbors have been rerouted as Washington continues to implement its naval blockade on Iran.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), 65 merchant ships were redirected during the mission, while four others were rendered inoperative as part of the campaign.
“USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) continues operations in the Arabian Sea, including enforcement of the US blockade against Iran,” CENTCOM stated in a message published on the American social media network X.
Regional instability intensified significantly following military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, prompting Iranian counterattacks targeting Israel and American partners in the Gulf, alongside the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire arranged through Pakistani mediation came into force on April 8; however, negotiations held in Islamabad did not succeed in securing a lasting settlement.
US President Donald Trump subsequently declared that the ceasefire would stay effective indefinitely, despite ongoing armed tensions and maritime limitations across the Gulf area.
The United States has upheld a naval blockade on Iran since April 13.
