Israeli Parliament Advances Bill to Dissolve Knesset in First Vote

(MENAFN) Israel’s Knesset approved a bill to dissolve itself in a preliminary reading on Wednesday, with backing from both coalition and opposition lawmakers.

Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana said 110 members voted in favor of the proposal, with no votes against it, according to the parliament’s official channel.

The vote represents the first step in a multi-stage legislative process that could ultimately lead to early elections.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not take part in the plenum vote as he was attending a security meeting, according to reports.

The bill still requires several additional readings before it can become law and trigger the dissolution of the Knesset.
