Russia Holds Major Nuclear Forces Drill Raising Combat Readiness Levels
(MENAFN) Russia’s Defense Ministry said Wednesday that its armed forces have been carrying out exercises focused on bringing nuclear-capable military units to the highest state of combat readiness as part of large-scale strategic nuclear drills.
According to reports, the maneuvers included transporting nuclear munitions to field storage facilities located near missile brigade deployment zones.
"Personnel of missile units are carrying out training tasks involving the receipt of special warheads for the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system, equipping carrier missiles with the munitions and covertly moving to designated launch positions in preparation for missile launches," the ministry said.
The exercises reportedly involve more than 64,000 troops along with over 7,800 military assets.
Officials said the operation includes more than 200 missile launch systems, upwards of 140 aircraft, 73 naval surface vessels, and 13 submarines, including eight strategic missile submarines.
Reports also said the drills feature joint activities connected to the preparation and potential deployment of nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus as part of military coordination between Moscow and Minsk.
